Otherwise you could have written a completely new character for TLF to play the Skywalker role and it wouldn't have mattered one bit and the movie might have better off it hey did. Luke Skwalker in TLJ is by name and actor only. All in all it might have made a better stand alone movie with new characters. This movie can't seem to come to grips with why it exists and simply refuses to recognize for the most part what came before it and refuses to establish what will come after it. ![]() So nothing wrong with being different but that's not the problem here. TLJ couldn't be more completely off the mark with the return of Luke Skywalker. TFA got this completely right with the return of Han Solo. You can put them in new and different circumstances, and present new challenges for them in the story but the characters remain invested in their original portrayal. Especially these particular well known and beloved characters. ![]() Here's the deal: if you are going to reprise the rolls of characters from the original trilogy, you inherit the way the characters were established and portrayed over the course of the trilogy. What, is it supposed to start with him completely grown as a new resistance leader and Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo are now all of sudden old men and ladies for God knows what reason? And the little nameless kid at the end of the film that we never get to know on any level with his pet llama on steroids is hardly a set up for the next final film. It largely ignores and/or disposes of key characters and events established in the TFA and it doesn't do anything to set up the next concluding episode of the trilogy. The problem isn't new or different ideas in TLJ, the problem is that it is supposed to be the middle film of three part trilogy and as such it makes no sense. ![]()
